TOPEKA—“Fires and Floods and Tornadoes … Oh My!” was the theme for the first annual Kansas Human Services in Disaster Summit, which was July 30-31 in Topeka. The Kansas Division of Emergency Management organized the event.

Sandy Hendrickson, Kansas West Conference disaster response coordinator, Mark Eastman, Wichita West District disaster response coordinator, Dr. Earl Carlson, Hays District disaster response co-coordinator, and I attended the summit.

Besides establishing important relationships with other people who are actively engaged in disaster response throughout Kansas, we attended many general and break-out sessions. The topics included compassion fatigue, public relations, establishing long-term recovery committees, disaster terminology, building partnerships, donation management and the role of community organizations in disasters.

Listening to state, regional and federal experts in the field of disaster response enabled us to glean new information to prepare for the next disaster-response ministry.

To have someone from the Disaster Response Committee talk to your congregation about being prepared to do the vital ministry of disaster response, contact Sandy Hendrickson at disaster response@fairpoint.net or me at kumc pastor@sctelcom.net or 620-825-4933.

Rev. Keith Fink is the chairperson of the Kansas West Conference Disaster Response Committee and pastor at Kiowa UMC.
