Bishop addresses questions about episcopal redeployment
Kansas Area Bishop Scott Jones has answered questions following the announcement that the Kansas East and West conferences and the Nebraska Conference of the United Methodist Church will share a bishop beginning Sept. 1, 2012.
“In 2008, the General Conference reworked the formula for how many bishops are allowed in each of the five jurisdictions in the United States,” Jones said. “That meant in the South Central Jurisdiction that we will move from having 11 bishops to 10 Sept. 1 of 2012.”
The jurisdiction’s College of Bishops made what Jones described as the best decision it could in deciding to put Nebraska and Kansas together.

‘Imagine something more’ to end malaria, bishop says
United Methodist Bishop Thomas Bickerton, chairperson of the Global Health Initiative for the United Methodist Council of Bishops, seeks nothing less than the elimination of malaria by 2015. Malaria is a treatable and preventable disease that still claims a life every 30 seconds.
He told directors of the United Methodist Committee on Relief during their Oct. 13 meeting that it will take a far greater effort than the “Nothing But Nets” program to achieve that goal.
A new campaign, “Imagine No Malaria,” has been formed, with a public launch set for the next World Malaria Day, April 25, 2010.

Trick-or-treat for UNICEF improves children’s lives
Every October, United Methodists have the opportunity to improve the lives of children around the world through a longstanding collaboration between the United Methodist Board of Church and Society and the U.S. Fund for UNICEF, the United Nations’ Children’s Fund. This collaboration, Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF, has helped UNICEF save more children’s lives than any other organization, according to Caryl Stern, U.S. Fund president. Last year, United Methodists raised more than $154,000 for UNICEF.

UM couple offers guide to adoption
When the Rev. Bart and Claudia Fletcher married in June 1996, it didn’t take them long to start a family.
The day after their honeymoon, the couple submitted an application to become foster parents. By October, they had their first boy and, three months later, the second came along.
Now—13 years, six foster children, and 12 adopted children later—Fletcher and Claudia have published a book promoting adoption that is both a guidebook and memoir.
They hope to help others who are navigating the territory of foster care and adoption that they have come to know so well.
