Communication Awards

The Communications Excellence awards are a program of the Marketing and Communications Council. These awards recognize excellence in local church communications in the areas of printed communications, web communications, electronic worship presentations and promotional campaigns.

Entries are judged for general excellence in each category by church size.   Size categories are based on average worship attendance—151 or more in worship, 76-150 in worship, 75 and less in worship. Churches may submit up to two entries in each communication category.

Printed communications includes Sunday worship bulletins, bulletin inserts, and newsletters.

Web communications includes websites and e-newsletters created and maintained by local churches. Sites may be original designs or a template-based solution maintained by church staff or volunteers.

Radio and TV communication includes ads, devotions and programs produced for television or radio broadcast by or for the church.

Electronic worship presentations includes worship aids generated with presentation software or video presentations created by church staff or volunteers for the purpose of supporting worship or small group ministries in the church.

Promotional campaigns includes communications where a variety of media – print, video, electronic – were used to create a campaign for stewardship, new buildings, additions, renovations, etc.

Entries will be judged on creativity, message clarity, use of colors and graphics, layout and mission.

Mail entries to the Marketing and Communications Office, 9440 E. Boston Suite 110, Wichita KS 67207.

Communication awards FAQ

How many copies are needed of Sunday worship bulletins, newsletters, fliers, bulletin inserts and other printed material?
Please send three different worship bulletins or newsletters and/or three examples of fliers, bulletin inserts and other printed materials so we can get an idea of the overall quality of the work.

Are these separate categories or does something need to be entered in each category to be considered?
Each type would be considered a separate entry: three worship bulletins is an entry, three newsletters is an entry, three fliers are an entry.

How do we enter our church's website?
Complete the entry form and include the website address (URL).

Can the worship presentations be entered electronically or do they need to be sent on a disc? Is a single Sunday's presentation appropriate or should it be a series?
Send on a CD disk three worship presentations from different Sundays at the church. It might also be helpful to include the Sunday bulletins from those weeks so the judges can get an idea of how the presentation fits into the order of worship.

Can more than one worship presentation be entered for separate consideration?
Each entry in this category should contain three samples, so you could enter more than once, but you would need several weeks of presentations to complete more than one entry.

Do the printed items have to be actually produced or published by the church or can they be published on behalf of the church by a commercial printing firm?
Printed materials may be printed by a commercial printing firm, but the church staff or communications committee should have had a significant role in the development of the concept and approval over design. In other words, the church primarily designed the item, not the printer.
