Greensburg UMC: Post-tornado The members of Greensburg UMC never let the destruction in their town destroy their spirit. Jeanne Sneed - Thrown into service Just days before the Greensburg tornado, Jeanne Sneed was asked to be the Disaster Coordinator for her church in Haviland. Days later, she was leading her church in the response effort. Karen Chenoweth - Answering the mission call at home Karen Chenoweth, member of Haviland UMC, has always wanted to be involved in missions. Although health issues prevented her from going on mission trips, the tornado that struck the Greensburg area on May 4th, 2007, brought a mission site to her own doorstep. Haviland UMC - Undamaged but not unchanged Even though Haviland, Kansas, sustained no major damage from the May 4th tornado that leveled most of neighboring Greensburg, the church there has been greatly affected by the events following the disaster. Terry Mayhew - Unusual Appointment Circumstances Terry Mayhew was asked to become the pastor of Greensburg UMC the day before the tornado destroyed the town. Despite the devastation and the new challenges that pastoring the church would bring, he accepted the appointment and has been serving at the church since September. One Great Hour of Sharing One Great Hour of Sharing supports the administration of the United Methodist Committee on Relief. Each year, UMCOR provides assistance to people affected by disaster around the world. In 2007, UMCOR provided assistance across Kansas for victims of flooding, ice storms and tornadoes. Hispanic Congregations in Liberal and Dodge City Liberal First UMC and Dodge City First UMC have opened up their buildings to Hispanic congregations for Spanish language worship services.
